167th Industry Leader Lunch

E-mail Print PDF

POSTPONED -The long anticipated industry leader lunch with Willie Walsh, CEO of British Airways scheduled on Monday 29th March will be postponed due to the "planned" 7 day industrial action announced 12th March 2010 by UNITE the union representing 12,000 BA cabin crew.

As many of you are aware we kept the event planning in place in the hope that a last minute resolution of this high profile industrial dispute would be found. My thanks to members who pre booked tables for this event, all monies will be refunded. Thanks also to Willie Walsh's office for keeping AFA regularly updated.

Having just observed the UNITE press conference announcing the planned strike (subject to electronic ballot mid next week ) live on SKY TV, battle lines have clearly been drawn for this high stakes industrial action."Mother of all fights" was one the Sky commentators colourful comments. The UNITE unions emotive comments relating to safety, terrorism and questions on the strikes effect on the UK election, were indeed signs of the times.
Every cloud potentially has a silver lining and my hope is that the massive media attention which will now be focused on the BA strike will ask some fundamental questions about the state of airline finances, and the publics unrealistic expectation that air fares can only go down.Final wishful thinking is that as the mayhem of the strike unfolds politicians will recognise that when the goose that lays the golden eggs is grounded the impact on the economy and society is massive.

AS EVER YOUR NEWS AND VIEWS ARE WELCOME....please do take a regular look at the  "Sign of the Times" section by clicking on the HOME page of this website for our current  media commentary.

As an industry we are good at talking to ourselves and poor at external advocacy?
